Online medical education: it’s not just a classroom on the web, by Professor Alan Gillies and Dr John Howard et al
Professor Alan Gillies and his co-workers from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN), Preston, UK, ran an innovative Medical Informatics Workshop at the IAHCP 26th Annual Scientific Meeting 2015.
The team reported that the perception of online learning is often that it is a convenient but inferior substitute for face-to-face learning. The authors posit that much of this is due to a failure to appreciate the need for alternative learning methodologies for online delivery. They also stated that too often the assumption is made that the best form of online learning is simply a translation of forms developed for face-to-face delivery.
In their workshop they explored the lessons from their 15 years of delivery of the first online Masters validated by UCLAN, which they started back in the year 2000. The programme has formed the basis of both a European curriculum, and the pilot leadership programme for the NHS Future leaders in knowledge and information management. They emphasised that the programme is still running and under the leadership of one of the founding staff members.
The group showed the conference how the design was optimised for online delivery to minimise the disadvantages and take advantage of the strengths of online delivery. They also showed how it has adapted to both external pressures and the changing needs of the target audience.
They further demonstrated that the lessons learnt from the online MSc continue to be used to deliver new forms of professional learning through online mentoring and CPD schemes using cases from professional bodies and advanced paediatric nursing
